But Johnny makes it clear he wants more and Izzy already knows she wants as much of hot-in-bed, sweet-out-of-it Johnny Gamble. Floating on air thinking this is going somewhere, Izzy quickly learns why Johnny holds distant. Someone who left him and did it leaving him broken.
Johnny Gamble lives in a place with a waterwheel, you will never forget this either since it is mentioned over a dozen times. The author tries to set up various conflicts and bad guys and ultimately fails very badly in K. The writing is horrible, even without the grammar issues.
The characters are meh and then don't forget here's His name is used so much you likely like me will forget the female lead. There isn't much to her or memorable about her. She is very similar to the female character in the last book I read. Then insert you grunting, the inability to use a full sentence and on and on and on.[Ebook] The Hookup (Moonlight and Motor Oil #1) by Kristen Ashley
Deanna's name is said so much I remember that. Then add the German term of endearment and puke a little. I was once a big K. Now I hope to never see another book from her. You know how there are some great character actors?
There are some authors out there that have that same ability with books. She used to be one of them. If a half star was an option, I would have gone that way. The crazy ex boyfriend who broke into her house? We never hear from him. The ex girlfriend who skipped town and left our hero heartbroken? We hear about her and are told about the confrontation but we don't get to experience it. Heck, even bringing the deadbeat dad into the story would of done something for it but no we get nothing.
Just two people who fall in love and face zero true obstacles. Even the kidnapping was a couple pages and solved with no real trouble. Oh place a phone call and have your brother return the baby please.
If you like almost insta love stories with no conflict this book is for you. I never thought I would write this about a KA book, but what was the purpose of writing the book--other than fulfilling a contract. The Hookup just sort of meanders through pages with gushy, overly sweet words. The plot is incredibly thin, with almost no drama.
KA, where is your spirit? H and h are both so gorgeous; both so full of love and sweetness that they are not only unbelievable, but boring. Still it was a KA book and was a little better than complete junk.
I just wish she would get her old creativity back and write real drama with realistic characters. I'm in the minority here, but I thought it was meh. Starting with the authors writing style. It's very choppy and distracting to read. Too much description about stuff that doesn't matter. It felt very passive. Switching from 1st to 3rd person is so annoying to me. The dialog was the best part, but even that was confusing to read at times. Sometimes the dialog dragged as well.
The sex scenes were pretty hot, but really, that's it. I thought Jonhny was a jerk. I did not find him endearing or charming at all. He was sorta misogynistic. He kept telling Izzy "I'm that kinda guy" with things like her lifting heavy stuff. Or taking care of her own horses. It got so annoying to me because she was doing it just fine without him there. Why did he deem her incapable once he got into the picture? Women are always seen as weak. Yet this guy, and many others, have their masculinity threatened just from looking at pink stuff?
He was also so flipping obsessed with money. He wanted to buy her all new things because she never had new stuff.
Izzy grew up poor so she knew how to live within her means by finding deals on stuff. So she would take old things, other people didn't want anymore, and fix them up, clean them up, and make them beautiful. I thought it was insulting that he was insistent that she have all new stuff. It is not love. Nor is it romantic to me. Money and stuff do not equal love. I liked Izzy, but she was a little too perfect. Perfect people in books get annoying. I end up eye rolling until my eyeballs get stuck in the back of my head.
She somehow managed to have all this free time taking care of a million animals, 3 acres of land, have an hour commute to and from work, and be the director of a department at work.
It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Especially because she never actually seemed to be at work? The epilogue was a disappointment. Everything fell flat for me. Obviously, a lot of people liked it, but it just wasn't my favorite.

She was a good person, a hard worker, loved her sister, loved her friends She was tough, loyal, and sensible! She liked sex, but had never had a ONS before Johnny and ya know I liked that about her too.
I'm not a fan of "hooking up" to tell you the truth. I like emotion with my sex. And of course, we all knew it wasn't going to be a ONS in the end. I liked how things ended btx them, him not hating her, her not hating him. Him wanting the best for her, her wanting the best for him though she'd always love him and had hoped for that second chance. I hope she finds a HEA with someone else.
Why not a higher rating? Honestly, it was too easy! Johnny is too perfect. Besides a sometimes too quick temper, and a need to be bossy scratch that, I like bossy he was the perfect male specimen, husband and father material. He freaking changed diapers Yes, he broke things off with Eliza after his ex called and said she was coming back into town.
And he did seem to be treating Iz like all his other past women at first, but I think both reactions were knee-jerk. But get this people Eliza let him go!
Yes, she wanted something more with him and was bummed it wasn't going to work out, but she did not chase after him. She did not plead with him to give them a chance. She didn't get angry and turn into a shrew.
She didn't decide to settle for second best either. She licked her shallow wounds and moved the hell on! It was Johnny who opened his eyes a couple weeks later and chased her! But the head out of ass came so early in the book it made for a boring relationship read at times. There are the usual paragraphs of dialogue I have to reread to understand, and some still didn't make sense.
There is the usual rambling minutiae of making a cup of coffee or whipping up a batch of guac. I also don't get these women who talk about ALL the intimate details of their sex life with their gfs.
Especially someone like Eliza who was a bit prissy and shy at least outside of bed with Johnny so it seemed out of character. I didn't like Addie walking in on them in the barn, and then blabbing it to everybody.
Eliza should have freaked about it. Johnny didn't seem to care either. I wish we would have been shown the confrontation scene with Shandra, not told about it. The view spoiler [baby kidnapping hide spoiler ] seemed only thrown in for drama sake, and was resolved so quickly I didn't see the point.
Who I imagine the next book might be about. And Margot was a busybody, but I liked her. I just don't understand how everyone can know how special the heroines are in K. So I'm gonna give it a try it's a sad, sad day when I'm not sure I want to read a new K. At least it's not another 20 year separation for stupid reasons, that's something I guess. The book was mostly light and steamy, had little drama not as much as the blurb implied , and would be a nice read when you're looking for something that would make you swoon.
I admit it takes time getting used to their switch in POVs because Izzy's POV was told in first person and Johnny's in third, but overall I liked the way the narrative was written. My biggest issue why I didn't fully fall in lo 3. My biggest issue why I didn't fully fall in love with this book is because the two protagonists seemed too perfect at times.
Sometimes, Izzy feels like she came out of a Disney fairytale. She literally has a canary resting on her shoulder when she cooks breakfast in the morning. Full review to be posted after the holidays. I'm still thinking about Johnny and Izzy. This couple ruined me in a good way, I loved them so much each of them and I feel connected.
I loved their journey, they have some really intense and super moments but at the same time some really sad. The Hookup is a must read, such a beautiful way to start a new series. I can't wait for the next book!! View all 4 comments. Nov 02, Elizabeth rated it really liked it Shelves: The only place I felt safe. KA is back with another sweet and sexy contemporary romance. Izzy Forrester is new in town and after escaping a bad break up with a stalker ex, she is happy to settle in her new simple life.
When Izzy shares one night with the small town's broody and broken-hearted Johnny Gamble, she was only looking for a quick hookup. But when Johnny and Izzy connect, sparks fly and one night will never be enough. Can Johnny get over his past relationship and give Izzy his whole heart? And if he does, can Izzy trust Johnny to care for her and give her everything she needs? From the first word on the first page, I felt an instant connection to the characters and their plight.
Both Johnny and Izzy have been through so much and finding each other brought them both comfort and peace through the storm. The supporting characters enhanced the story greatly and I hope there will be more to come from these characters and their small town lives.
In true KA fashion, the passion between Johnny and Izzy was smoking hot and although there was a great deal of drama, the story was engaging and truly heartfelt. Kristen Ashley has and always will be my absolute favorite author. I thoroughly enjoy her writing style and the way in which she transports me to another world. When Kristen Ashley is writing, my kindle and I are ready and waiting for more!

Did the H and this OW have a romance that the town dubbed as being "epic"? He was hurt by her leaving him and ruining their relationship for sure, but he wasn't interested in reconciliation.
I liked both characters, and I felt like the H was all in for the h, completely present in the 3 Stars Overall Opinion: I liked both characters, and I felt like the H was all in for the h, completely present in their relationship, and not stuck the past. I also felt like this story, overall, was very similar to others works of hers that I've read.
While I did enjoy the characters and the experience of reading their story, I didn't love it. It felt just okay to me. This is Izzy and Johnny's story.
They meet one night at a bar and end up hooking up for Izzy's first ONS, but she quickly learns that Johnny wasn't expecting it to be just one night. They both feel a strong pull towards one another, and there is no denying the hot chemistry they have in bed. When Johnny's ex shows up, he feels the need to hit the breaks on what is developing between them. When they bump into one another again weeks later, they feel the pull stronger than ever and start up a relationship.
There is some family and ex drama, some hot sexy times, and some sweet moments I liked that we got more from the H's perspective in this! It helps me understand where he is coming from and his behavior. Overall Pace of Story: Good until the end -- see closure section below. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well. No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings. I appreciated how he took care of those he cared about. She was so strong, loyal, and sweet.
She has to be one of my favorite KA hs. I teared up a little, but I never needed any tissues. Yes view spoiler [The H does push away when his ex returns, but just because he thinks the h deserves better he has no interest in rekindling things with the OW. I would say that the H is the main pursuer of the relationship. They have some hot tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.
Yes, but not nearly as bad as I expected! He does break things off with the h, but that is because he thinks she deserves better and not because he is pining over the OW. Yes view spoiler [They are separated shortly 2 weeks?
Yes view spoiler [Loss of a parent to cancer off page - through mentions , child abandonment off page - through mention , poverty off page - through mention , cheating side character - through mention , stalking off page - through mentions , kidnapping on page , and domestic violence off page - through memories and mentions.
This actually didn't have the closure that I come to expect and love from KA. I'm disappointed we didn't get a jump ahead epilogue with a concrete HEA. I would call this a HFN ending view spoiler [they are engaged hide spoiler ]. View all 16 comments. So, I was more than happy to read the story of Johny and Izzy. Izzy was as adorable and as cute as I expected her to be. She loves animals, flowers, birds and working hard. The fairytale feeling around her is cute. Her dogs are cute, her cats are cute, the bird on her shoulder is cute, her horses are cute, her kitchen is cute, her clothes are cute, her behaviour is cute. And Johny is a gentleman completely.
He loves her cuteness. He craves her adorability. He wants to look after her horses. And he is great in bed. Completely Disney cartoon fairytale! Which not only I did not mind Until chapter nine, the book was a 5 star lovestory for me.
The ex girlfriend had faded away in the background. And Johny was really trying to win Izzy and become part of her cute life. And then suddently in chapter 9, something happens. The ex girlfriend appears and while Johny flirts with Izzy in front of the small town; he decides that it is a good idea to run literally after his ex girlfriend and his ex dog that he has given to his ex girlfriend as a gift when they split.
And Izzy who did not understand what happened, she ran back to her house hiding from the judgmental eyes of the small town.
The hookup kristen ashley read online free
And I really did not mind that! I was actually happy that finally something happened that could create a bit of angst to the story. I honestly stopped reading at that point thinking that only major grovelling can save Johny now. And I am crazy for a good grovelling in lovestories. I actually crave it in my books.
So, I stopped reading the book there thinking that the good part will start soon Johny appeared, a hot scene happened but there was not any 'I am sorry', only excuses and explanations that Johny did not run after his ex girlfriend, but after his ex dog.
The same dog that he did not hesitate to gift to his ex girlfriend; but he did not also hesitated to run after him and abandoned his new girlfriend in the middle of making out. I was thinking after that explanations that maybe Izzy should apologize to him. Anyway, after that my enthusiasm was dampened. There was a downfall in the whole story. And I stopped caring about what happens next. But I finished the book. Perfect if you need a charmingt little ride in Romancelandia.

This has been quite the year for Kristen Ashley and her readers. She has released quite a lot of books and of course, she ended it with a bang! She starts a new series with The Hookup and I already have fallen in love with all these new characters she has presented. The Hookup is the first installment in the Moonlight and M 4. Izzy falls instantly but Johnny has been in a bad place for several years: It was the beginning of something.
If you have been following me since I started blogging, you know by now that Kristen Ashley is probably my absolute favorite romance author. I always get extremely excited when she announces or releases anything and The Hookup was no exception. This baby practically appeared out of nowhere when KA announced it and, of course, she made it into another outstanding piece of writing.
That dress is so fucking hot I want to haul you around to the back, shove the skirt up, rip your panties off and fuck you against The Star. Izzy comes from a difficult past, a past without a father but with a loving mother and sister and an abusive boyfriend. Johnny, as I said before, is not in the best place either. Also, during the first chapters is not easy for him to see what he feels for Izzy. However that changes pretty quickly!
Izzy stoles his heart, body and soul completely with her easy laughter, her beautiful personality and everything that makes Izzy the way she is. Of course, the same happens for Izzy. Johnny Gamble is the good, settled and sexy man in town and she is not about to pass that up to anybody.
When Johnny focuses on her and their happiness together, they become one. And can I mention the incredible chemistry these two have? KA is also the queen of alpha males, that is for sure! The sex between Izzy and Johnny is extremely hot and when their feelings also get in the mix, even better!
I loved them, I loved their families again awesome secondary characters! Can I also say, I very much hope that the next story is about Toby and Addie?
They are so cute together and with Brooks, they melted my heart! I am sure KA will deliver a great second installment in this series. I'll be honest I have pretty much given up on KA ever writing a book that comes close to some of her earlier ones.
She used to be an automatic buy for me, but now I pretty much pass them by without a second look. That said, a lot of people seemed to like the is one. Said it was "old school" KA etc. So I figured I would give it a go As much as her early stuff Would I re-read it? But it was an enjoyable read for the most part. It wasn't overly long and drawn I'll be honest I have pretty much given up on KA ever writing a book that comes close to some of her earlier ones.
The sex scenes were hot. All the characters were likable. But compared to some of the utter crap she has put out lately, this one came closet to the KA out old.

Not that long ago, I worked from home and set my own hours which gave me a wee bit of leeway when my favourite author released a new book. Now, I actually have to walk out my door to go to work and manage my reading time around work hand to my forehead…the burdens we carry. A couple of hours in the morning and then trying to read after work, without doinking myself on the A new plan A couple of hours in the morning and then trying to read after work, without doinking myself on the head with my Kindle when I nod off, is not a lot of reading time.
So, it was time to adjust. I decided to listen to The Hookup as well as read. This worked really well for me. Morning reading, listen while in transit to and from work and then a mix of reading and listening when I got home. It was actually a really enjoyable way to experience this story. Well, the narrators do the hard yards for you. I thought that was pretty cool. Anyways… I really enjoyed The Hookup. The storyline was interesting, the main characters were my favourite type of Alpha meets Quirky, and it was HOT!!
Seriously, these guys do not take long to show us that they are very, VERY well suited to each other. I loved that Johnny was pretty straight with Izzy. Johnny knew that his heart was damaged but pretty quickly realised that Izzy may be the person to fix it.
He made it clear he was interested, kept the communication open and always tried to be considerate of her feelings. I have no problems with a hero who steps up to help with chores whether they are mowing the lawn or washing the dishes. I dream of my hubby saying something like that to me. He brings out the sexy in her…and she likes it. The Hookup was a very easy story to settle into. Most of the drama is around the couple with them fighting it together, which is the way I like it.
I can't wait to meet them again hopefully soon. Kristen Ashley is still my favouritist author in the whole entire world and I loved stepping into Matlock, Kentucky with the characters she created.

Now, The Hookup, wow You know what I recognized about KA's books? The male protagonist in her books have this air of unapologetic, confident vibe to them that is so honest yet not rude. They have this no nonsense attitude to them that whenever they open their mouth to say even the simplest thing- I can't help but smile so wide and feel my inner fan girl squeal with joy. You know what else I love? Like they say "own it, babe". Eliza is innocent but not in a naive way- more in the- She is not a risk-taker, she's a creature of habit.
Her quirkiness is her need for schedule.. If there is something to be said about Lizzie, it is that she is responsible, careful and guarded. He is dependable, understanding He is basically what we ALL want in a badass alpha macho man hahaha. KA's stories are mostly based on the age old 'love at first sight.. It's the most cliche start to a story, right? But KA does what she does best and writes a damn good book.
If you haven't noticed from my rambling.. I love Kristen Ashley's books.. She has woven her magic yet again with The Hookup. Was it one of my favourite KA book?

Jan 20, Janie rated it really liked it Shelves: I should know though that with her magic, KA would find a way to turn that around. He definitely made some wrong moves in the beginning, one of which was a misunderstanding for Izzy and myself as a reader.
Izzy was sweet, caring and honest. She has the biggest heart and anyone in her circle is lucky to call her a friend or sister. In doing that though, the Johnny she ended up with was a man that any woman would be lucky to call her own. All he wanted was to love her completely knowing he would get that in return. He wanted to take care of her and give her the sweetest life she could dream up.

I give up, after finally realizing that she's just not the author for me. I have probably read three or four books of hers — very little compared to all the works she's published — but that was enough for me to recognize her writin I'm barely four words into this review and I'm already cringing because I know that I'll be in the minority with my opinion.
It just was something void of deep emotions or any kind of significant event. It was like spying on a relationship that had just begun and turned serious pretty quickly, with the main characters having hot sex, not communicating enough and coming to the conclusion they were perfect for each other in just a few weeks. You'll say, but this is like, the plot of thousands of Romance books!
Love at first sight, steamy sex, premature declarations of undying love and cheesy conversations about the name of the protagonists' future babies. Eliza is thirty-one, she's completely independent and with a job she loves. The only relative she has left is her younger, married sister, and her last relationship ended so badly, her psycho ex broke in her apartment, stole a family token and threatened to hurt her.
That's why she decides to leave the city and move to a charming, little town from where she'll commute every day to work. She buys land for her horses, dogs, cats and canaries. She's the perfect Romance heroine. She's kind, she lives by herself, doesn't need a man to feel accomplished, loves her animals more than she loves most people. She's sexy, she's style, she'd do anything for her sister and her infant nephew. But then, one night, when she feels lonely and ready to get to know her new town better and make new acquaintances, she goes to the local bar, where she meets tall and dark Johnny.
He buys her drinks but also orders a glass of water for her, when he realizes she's had enough alcohol. So he's considerate, respectful and incredibly handsome. He asks her questions and pays attention to all her replies. But he never reveals anything about his own life. Eliza doesn't notice that immediately, and when they go back to Johnny's beautiful house and spend the night together, all she can think about is how perfect their chemistry is and how desirable he is.
Johnny is, actually, a good man. He's blunt and honest when it comes to what he likes about Eliza, but turns cold and closed-off when the woman inquires about his family. It's only after Eliza comes back home, with the promise from Johnny to have dinner with her two days later, that her best friend, Deanna, fellow resident of the small town, informs her that Johnny had an epic love story with the town's beauty: Everyone believed they'd end up getting married and having children, and when Shandra left and abandoned Johnny, he never recovered.
So Deanna obviously warns her friend against falling in love with the beautiful man, because she fears Eliza might end with a broken heart. At this point, keeping in mind the book blurb, I expected not only for Johnny to still feel something for his ex-girlfriend and supposedly love of his life, but also that, at some point, Shandra would come back and cause a drama of epic proportions. I'll be honest, I craved that drama. I wanted Johnny to be a tortured asshole, Shandra to be a beautiful bitch and Eliza to suffer, rebel, leave, and in the end be the only real love of Johnny's life.
There was almost no drama, it was clear that Eliza was never going to be second-best. Johnny fell for her that first night they met, and Shandra was actually a good person. She'll repeat words and phrases over and over, as well as thoughts and trivial actions. It could be the author trying to make the reader understand how her characters think and behave, but it gets tiring after a few pages.
